The purpose of the fivefold ministry is to equip the saints to do the work of the ministry and edify the body of Christ.  The ministry is ordained by God until the body of Christ comes to believe one doctrine, have an intimate knowledge of the Son of God, and be complete in Christ measured by the stature of His fulness.  This will never be fully accomplished on earth.  The purpose will ultimately be fulfilled when we are glorified together with Christ.
